Fighting between predominantly Muslim Seleka rebels, anti-balaka militias, and other armed groups forced thousands to flee their homes as fighters killed civilians and looted and burned properties. The deal was the sixth signed since the crisis started in late 2012 and represents the greatest effort by both international and national actors to include all relevant parties to date.ĭespite the peace deal, armed groups committed serious human rights abuses against civilians country-wide in 2019, with more than 70 percent of the country remaining under their control. The countries covered below are, in sequence from the top: the Central African Republic, Cameroon, Nigeria, Mali, Somalia, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, South Sudan, Mozambique and Libya.Ī Political Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation was signed between the government of the Central African Republic and 14 armed groups in Bangui in February.
